The Texas capital, located between the rolling Hill Country and fertile farmland, has a vibrant cultural life and a young population that includes 50,000 University of Texas students. Founded in 1835 as Waterloo, it became the seat of government upon independence, changing its name to honor statesman Stephen F. Austin. The city was plagued by flooding along the Colorado River until a series of flood-control dams were constructed in 1938, forming the chain of Highland Lakes that includes Town Lake and Lake Austin.
