A collection of global scope is presented in this vast, stair-stepped building (1984, Edward L. Barnes). Its highlight is Arts of the Americas, a unique survey of human cultural evolution in the Western Hemisphere. Beginning with amulets and jewelry of prehistoric civilizations, it follows creative man through the Spanish and British colonial periods, right up to 20C Texas. Highlights include paintings by Albert Bierstadt, Andrew Wyeth and Georgia O'Keeffe, as well as Frederic Church's The Icebergs (1861), Thomas Hart Benton's The Prodigal Son (c.1939-41) and sculptor James Earl Frasier's End of the Trail (c.1918).The European Painting & Sculpture galleries offer classical antiquities; 19C canvases by Manet, Degas, Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh and Gauguin; and 20C works by Mondrian, Picasso, Braque and Modigliani. There are sculptures by Rodin, Moore and Oldenburg. The Contemporary Gallery, one of the largest collections of post-1945 art in the Southwest, presents works by Rothko, Pollock, Motherwell, Warhol, Diebenkorn and other mid- to late-20C artists. The Wendy & Emery Reves Collection features 19-20C European painting and diverse decorative arts. Its setting recalls a French Riviera villa, and it has a full room devoted to paintings and memorabilia of Sir Winston Churchill. The Arts of Africa and Arts of Asia and the Pacific exhibits show a wide range of world cultures.
