Menil Collection

Highly recommended
One of the world's foremost collections of 20C art, with an emphasis on Surrealism, is presented here. Established in 1987 for the collection of John and Dominique de Menil, the museum exhibits only a small part of more than 15,000 paintings, sculptures, photographs and books. Italian architect Renzo Piano's design has been acclaimed for its use of natural light in display areas. The Surrealist collection features more works by René Magritte and Max Ernst than any other museum in the world. Also represented are paintings by Cézanne, Klee and Matisse; early Cubist work by Braque, Léger and Picasso; Abstract Expressionism by Pollock and Rothko; and late-20C works by Johns, Rauschenberg, Stella and Warhol. Other galleries hold Paleolithic carvings from the eastern Mediterranean; Byzantine and medieval works; and tribal arts of Africa, Oceania and the Pacific Northwest coast.
