Alexandria
The Essential
Recommended
Situated just a few miles down the Potomac River from the nation's capital of Washington DC, this enclave of historic homes and churches set along tree-shaded brick walks retains its colonial charm and an atmosphere of slow-paced Southern gentility. Historic Old Town carefully preserves its early American architectural heritage, and the waterfront area is graced with pretty parks. Restaurants and boutiques line King and Washington Streets. The visitor center at Ramsay House is a good place to begin your explorations; most of the historically noteworthy structures are located with an easy walk of the waterfront area.
