Zwinger Palace

Highly recommended
Augustus the Strong's initial idea was to build an orangery on the site of an old fortress. His architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann embellished the original project to create this vast esplanade surrounded by galleries and pavilions. This Baroque gem is striking for the harmony between its sculptures (by Balthazar Permoser, a Bavarian artist influenced by his trips to Italy) and the architectural building as a whole. The building now houses five museums, including the Old Masters Picture Gallery.
