A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cidade Velha preserves some remains of the once thriving Ribeira Grande, a stronghold that was the scene of the first hours of Cape Verde's colonisation. On the square surrounded by old mud-built houses is the pillory: the only trace from the era of slavery that made the archipelago rich. The ruins of the imposing cathedral and the Fortaleza Real de São Filipe, which was built in 1585, are also worth seeing.
