Al-Rifa'i Mosque

This mosque built in 1912 is a pastiche of the Mamluk style. It houses the sepultures of Kings Fwad and Faruk, and cenotaphs of Princess Hanim (mother of Ismail Pasha) and the last Shah of Iran. To the left of the minbar, the mihrab of the Syrian inspired iwan, has rich marble and gilt plating. In an adjacent chapel containing numerous tombs - note the peculiar acoustics - stands that of Ferdinand de Lesseps's sister, with its combination of Christian and Muslim motifs.
