Mahébourg, at the southeast end of the motorway crossing the island from Port Louis, is a lively and pleasant shopping town with fabric shops, a colourful market, fishermen selling their catch, and a fabrics market on Mondays. There is also an attractive seafront walk facing Ile au Mouchoir Rouge and streets as straight as a ruler, a legacy from French colonial days. The name Mahébourg comes from Governor Mahé de la Bourdonnais.
