The Essential
St-Gabriel, in the centre of the island, is worth a visit for its pretty coral-stone cathedral, one of the largest in the Indian Ocean, built from 1936 to 1939 with the help of parishioners who carried the necessary materials here from the coast. Hundreds of the faithful come from all over the island to attend mass here on Sundays, when scores of Rodriguans can be seen on the road wearing their flounced lace dresses or cramped suits and a cross around their neck.
