Souillac was a very busy port during the Golden Age of the sugar industry in the 19C. Today it is a quiet fishing harbour, with the pleasant Telfair municipal garden and the Robert Edward Hart Memorial Museum devoted to the Mauritian poet. On the coast, the Gris Gris Cliffs (swimming dangerous) and the weeping rock are worth the trip. Inland, you can visit Rochester Falls and the Vanilla Nature Park, the tropical wildlife reserve of Mascarenes and Africa.
