A masterpiece of Hispano-Moorish art, the Koutoubia was built on the orders of Almohad sultan Abd el-Moumen, who razed the palace of the Almoravid Abu Bakr in order to build this mosque. Built by the sultan's grandson, Yacoub el-Mansour, the 69m minaret is crowned by four copper balls, the largest of which measures 2m in diameter. Each side of the minaret is covered with a different decor of floral motifs and delicately carved interlacing.
