Salé
The Essential

Salé was once a fortress, a prosperous city until the late 16C thanks to international trade, before being supplanted by Rabat, from which it is separate by the Bou Regreg River. It is currently benefiting from investments aimed at giving it a second wind: development of the riverbanks, opening of an arts and crafts centre and other tourist infrastructures. Salé's real charm lies intra-muros, between its souks and its medersa. Be sure to buy some pottery here: it is a speciality of the town on account of the nearby Oulja quarries.
