Cilaos is famed for its clean air, cool climate - very welcome in the hot season - and thermal springs. Nonetheless, it had to wait until the late 19C and the opening of the thermal baths by Dr Mac Auliffe for its development to take off. Nowadays, rue du Père Boiteau is the hub of village activity, with its shops and restaurants; the Maison de la Broderie displays delicate traditional embroidery work. Note also the slender bell tower of the church, Église Notre Dame des Neiges.
