Piton de la Fournaise

Highly recommended
Texts may mention the presence of a "mountain of fire" in the southeast of the island as early as the 17C, but the first accounts of anyone climbing the volcano did not appear until over a century later. Although easily accessible nowadays, the Piton de la Fournaise does remain one of the world's most active volcanoes. It isn't particularly dangerous, though, and it regularly offers a fascinating spectacle of the raging elements, best seen if possible at sunrise or, better still, sunset.
