British settlers created Grahamstown in the early 19C, when thousands of Xhosa were killed or displaced. The historic centre has retained a very British look with its Anglican churches and Victorian-style houses that belonged to the old settlers. Grahamstown also has one of the country's largest universities. Its students and local artists bring added life to the town, along with the renowned National Arts Festival, held in July.
