Make sure you visit Kaili on a market day (Sunday), when you can see a fascinating array of foodstuffs, often arranged on the floor. The market is frequented by the Miao ethnic group, who are largely responsible for cultivating the rice terraces of the region, are experts in building with wood, and whose women are skilled in the art of embroidery and silverwork. Kaili makes a good base from which to explore the superb surrounding villages, built in the heart of the sculpted rice terraces that adorn the hillsides.
