The Essential
Matang stands out from its neighbouring villages, in that it is inhabited by the Gejia, a minority group with a distinct identity from that of the Miao, to whom they are nonetheless similar. The subtle difference is hard to spot for newcomers and is expressed mainly in the incredibly rich costumes which the women wear on their wedding day, the most striking feature of which is a fringed headdress fixed in place by a hairpin. Nowadays, women are gradually breaking with this tradition and only wear their costume for folklore festivals.
