The city that once amazed Marco Polo has fallen hook, line and sinker for modernity. But Suzhou has retained enough of interest to make it worthwhile spending several days here. Secreted away along its sleepy quays are the country's finest gardens, the prodigious collections of the Suzhou Museum, narrow pedestrian streets exuding provincial allure. The whole place is a pretext to enjoy refined pleasures, from gastronomy to lyrical opera to tea tasting.
