The Essential
In Zhoucheng, every family is involved in the production of magnificent blue and white batiks, in which the tie-dye is used. For a small square dyed by hand, a woman will spend a whole day making knots; then five days dyeing the fabric via a series of eight separate soakings. The patios of the houses here are occupied by indigo tanks and delightful fabrics hanging out to dry. If you would like to see a demonstration, just ask.
