Rajasthan
The Essential
Discover sprawling cities teeming with life, roam across empty deserts, lose yourself in the winding lanes of the bazars, plunge head-first into camel fairs and spend a night in a maharajah's palace... Rajasthan, land of kings, conjures up a thousand images and cannot fail but astound and amaze. Some of its sites are worthy of a trip in their own right: Delhi, one of the most fascinating cities of Asia thanks to its historic legacy and vitality; the pink walls of the Wind Palace of Jaipur; the colossal fortress of Mehrangarh looming over the blue city of Jodhpur; the lake palaces of Udaipur; the golden city of Jaisalmer on the doorstep of the desert... And of course, the fabulous Taj Mahal, at Agra, which remains the one of the most poignant testimonials of love of all time.
Rajasthan is also home to the incredibly arid steppe region of Shekhawati, whose monochrome landscape is only enlivened by the primitive frescoes of the impressive halevi noblemen's houses.
The vivid colours may well be what remain in your memory long after you've returned home, as you think back to the graceful silhouettes of the Indian women, draped in their bright skirts and saris, against the dry, dusty landscape!
