Capital of Rajasthan, Jaipur was built in the 18C by Jai Singh II, according to a checkerboard plan inspired by astronomy. This precise layout takes nothing away from the charms of the "pink city", which is enlivened by numerous bazaars selling local arts and crafts: precious and semi-precious stones, pottery, fabrics etc. In the heart of the old city stands the City Palace complex, surrounded by a crenellated wall and home to the extraordinary Palace of the Winds. Its screened windows were the favourite observation point for women living in the palace.
