When to go
Java enjoys a tropical monsoon climate, alternating between the dry season from May to October and the wet season from November to April. The heaviest rainfall (humidity levels in excess of 75%) occurs from January to March, except in the Bluran savanna, spared by the rain; in high-altitude areas, the temperatures can drop to 4°C/39°F.
May-June and September-October are the best times to visit the island. The weather is pleasant and the tourist sites are free of European visitors. From April to June, events occur at a dizzying pace: in April, the fishermen’s festival at Pelabuhanratu; at the temple of Borobodur during Waisak (April-May) and Borobudur Festival (May).
In June-July, the Kesenian Yogyakarta festival and the anniversary of Jakarta take over. Remember to check when Ramadan falls, because it can be difficult finding a restaurant open during the day at this period.
