Flores, like the other Sunda islands, houses myriad microcultures that are isolated from each other by the relief and carry on at a remove from the modern world. For travellers on the lookout for spectacular landscapes and atypical encounters, Flores is like a final frontier, a string of lands outside of time. Between arid kingdoms and fertile valleys, the Trans-Flores Highway serves the main towns, the major thoroughfare of an island, the organisation of which is threatened by the arrival of tourism.
