Compared to the relaxed harmony of its neighbour, Bali, Lombok surprises by its originality and striking landscapes. "Pepper" island, its Indonesian name, reveals a more untamed, rougher facet, a spicier side.
Blessed with fantastic beaches and volcanoes, the Indonesian island is attracting increasing numbers of visitors but it is still possible to venture off the beaten tourist track to discover what is still a very traditional society.
You may fancy climbing the Rinjani, a stone and ash divinity to whom Lombok owes its fertility. The summit embraces a magnificent panorama. Go for a walk down by the paddy fields, giant steps carved into the flanks of the volcanoes, then swap your hiking boots for flippers: the Gili archipelago, lying in a picture postcard setting of fishing boats, unfolds its fabulous submarine aquarium.
The ascension of the Rinjani will no doubt have satisfied your need for strong emotions, so now allow yourself to be rocked by the mild, sleepy atmosphere of Mawun, as you bask on a sandy beach lapped by turquoise waters... or head off to fill up on souvenirs: ikat, baskets, pottery, a wealth of pretty souvenirs to remind you of this trip!
