This Sasak village is one of the few in which the astonishing traditional thatched roofs houses have been preserved. Built out of interlaced bamboo or palm leaves, each house stands on a 1m-high wattle and daub platform with a stairway carved into it. The living quarters are often extended by a rice loft, whose strange horseshoe-shaped roof has become the emblem of Lombok. Despite the advent of tourism, the region's inhabitants have maintained their rural way of life.
