This "town beneath the castle" is steeped in the atmosphere of 19C Japan. The wooden Shinkoro clock tower (1871), which used to house the drum that raised the alarm, is perfectly preserved, as is the Eirakukan kabuki playhouse (1901) with its amazing scenery machinery. Karo-yashiki, the only abode from the Edo period to have survived the Great Fire of 1876, costumes and lances used during the Oshiro Matsuri are displayed. The thick red clay walls dotted with small windows protect an ancient sake brewery and cellars, Saka-gura.
