Koya-san
The Essential
Highly recommended
Koya-san is bewitching, with its Japanese cedars exuding their heady perfume, the serenity of a hundred monasteries, the prayers sent up by a thousand Buddhist monks, and its backdrop of thick wooded mountains. This remote little town remains a major pilgrimage destination. Some thirty or so temple-inns ("shukobo") offer bed and board for travellers to this city, a Unesco World Heritage Site, steeped in incense and bathed in mist.
