Kanman-ga-Fuchi Walk

Recommended
The picturesque Kanman-ga-fuchi walking trail starts at Stone Park. On a long track shaded by trees, you head up the bed of the Daiya River, known here as Kanman-ga-Fuchi Abyss, due to the geological phenomenon formed by lava from Mt Nantai. After 500m you come to a magnificent row of Jizō, different-sized stone statues of bodhisattva, in a variety of postures. At the far end, cross Dainichi Bridge to the other bank, then go back in the direction you came, via the botanical garden and Tamozawa Imperial Villa.

Our reports

Nikko, an exceptional and sacred place

In 1999, the whole world paid tribute to the baroque splendour of the shrines and temples of Nikko that gleam among the giant cedars, when the complex was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These architectural masterpieces are tightly bound up with the history of the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled from the 17C to the 19C.
