Fukuoka, to the north of Kyushu island, is a dynamic city. It has its sights firmly set on the future, as illustrated by the ultra-modern architecture in the Momochi district and an economy based on new technologies... as well as the fantastic Asian Art Museum. But the city has a 2 000 year history that has been deeply influenced by its proximity to China and Korea. Its old town is still intact, and the shops are now concentrated there. To sample the lively atmosphere around the yatai (food stalls), head to the banks of the Naka River that crosses Fukuoka.
