There are many good reasons to stop over in Kagoshima, overlooking a bay near the southern tip of Kyushu. The pleasant town itself, whose historic district unfolds around its old castle, encompassing a Modern Art Museum and a Historic Museum, both equally interesting. The countryside is also a major draw, with Sakurajima, an active volcano, providing a fine backdrop to Sengan-en, a garden planted with tropical species. It is also close to the hot-spring resort of Ibusuki (at the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula), where you might want to try a hot sand bath.
