Naha, capital of the archipelago of Okinawa, is located on Okinawa-honto, the largest island. It is a modern city with high-tech towers overlooking Kokusai-dori, a long avenue lined with all manner of shops that leads to the Makishi indoor market to the east. Its stalls are laden with the products on which the island has built its culinary reputation. Far from the bustle, the Tsuboya quarter has retained the appearance of a traditional village, and is entirely devoted to Okinawa's ancestral art of pottery. Shuri Castle to the north is a World Heritage Site.
