It was in this delightful, unspoiled little town that the story of fine Japanese porcelain began in the early 17C. The know-how acquired from Korean potters, as well as the use of white clay known as kaolinite, quickly resulted in the success of this blue coloured porcelain, decorated with gold. The town's 20,000 inhabitants stage a great ceramics fair every year from 29 April to 5 May in the narrow streets lined by white-fronted houses.
