For four centuries, this harbour town has been famous throughout Japan for its pottery. Fired at a very high temperature, the dark coloured ceramics are still produced in many kiln-workshops combined with galleries that enable visitors to admire the craftsmen at work. Perched on a promontory facing the islands and the beach, the castle was built in 1602 by feudal lord Terasawa Hirotaka. The five-storey keep was rebuilt in 1966.
