Capital of the prefecture of the same name, Saga (240,000 inhab.) is located by the Ariake Sea. Prosperous throughout the Edo Period under the yoke of the Nabeshima Clan, the town was officially founded in 1889 after the Meiji Restoration. The recently restored wooden castle houses the city's history museum. A few shops and some Samurai houses survived the 1874 revolt, fires and earthquakes. Saga beef, tender and flavoursome, is known throughout the country.
