Matsue
The Essential
Recommended

The capital of the Shimane prefecture (206,407 inhab.) stands on the shore of the Sea of Japan, at the confluence of Shinji Lake and Nakaumi Lagoon. Its remarkably well-preserved 17C castle boasts a tiered roof that towers over the city. Other highlights include thousand-year-old canals that riddle the feudal city, the eclectic collections of the Art Museum and the hot springs of Tamatsukuri, all of which make Matsue VERY inviting.
