Capital city of its namesake province, Tottori nestles at the mouth of the Sendai River, along the San-in coast facing the Sea of Japan. Particularly famous for its immense sand dunes, part of a major national park, this port town also possesses a huge mountainous hinterland around Mount Daisen, the site of beautiful temples and picturesque onsen. Sadly, the beautiful 16C castle built during the more prosperous Edo period and the rule of the Ikeda clan, is now a ruin.
