The Essential
Kasashima, the main village of Hon-jima Island, is home to a series of wooden houses dating from the Edo period and Meiji era, in addition to a former customs' house from the Edo period. In the past, the island and Inland Sea were the haunt of buccaneers, who doubled as customs' officials, collecting the taxes on maritime traffic to Osaka for the shogun.
