Oboke
The Essential
In the heart of the secluded Iya valley, the scenic Route 32 and railway line follow the River Yoshino, espousing a spectacular canyon as far as Oboke, 25km to the south of Awa Ikeda. Translated literally, Oboke means "big, dangerous step" in tribute to the incredibly enclosed terrain of the valley at this point. With its railway station, this unassuming town makes an ideal departure point to explore the valley and its gorges.
