Ozu
The Essential
The city of Ozu flourished from the end of the Edo period due to the manufacture and sale of plant wax, as did its neighbour Uchiko. Today it remains a fine example of a city "under a castle". Ohanahan-dori Street, lined in well-preserved tradesmen's (left) and samurai houses (right), dates from this era. Garyu Sanso Villa, built by the wealthy Joko family in the late 19C, is well worth a visit in its own right.
