Aizuwakamatsu
The Essential
This city of 122,715 inhabitants continues to boast many reminders of its illustrious past during the rule of powerful samurai lords such as Gamo Ujisato, who built the Tsurugajo castle, and Masayuki Hoshina, brother of shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. Although severely repressed at the time of the imperial restoration in 1868, because it had taken the side of the shogun, it was rebuilt thanks, in particular, to funds raised by merchants. Today still the city is home to picturesque streets, like Nanokamachi Street, lined with craft shops and sake breweries.
