Kakunodate's nickname, "Little Kyoto", is amply justified such does it take the visitor on a journey back in time. Founded in 1620, it is famous for its well-preserved samurai houses and gardens and an interesting merchants' district. In late April-early May, the cherry tree bower (2km/1.2mi long) down by the River Hinokinai should not be missed on any account, nor should the parade of decorated floats on September 7-8 during the 350-year-old autumn festival.
