Toyama
The Essential
This 420,000-strong town in the heart of the prefecture of the same name is located in the plain between the Tateyama range in the Japanese Alps and the Sea of Japan. During the Edo period, it was part of the territory of the Maeda clan of Kanazawa. Prosperous due to its agricultural, fishing, pharmaceutical industries and well-served by public transport (including the Shinkansen), this major town with wide boulevards is particularly well equipped culturally and also boasts a fine cuisine.
