The architecture of Kyrgyzstan's capital still bears the marks of decades of Soviet rule: collectivist buildings, wide boulevards and parks dotted with statues of Lenin, Marx and Engels. Its spirit, however, has reverted to Central Asia, and the city now has two distinct sides to it: first, the stifling city of summer, when everyone is on the lookout for one of the few shady spots, and the ice-cold city of winter, when semi-nomads return to swell the ranks of a city buried beneath the snow.
