The capital of the province of Champasak, located at the confluence of the Mekong and Sedon rivers, Pakse is a modestly sized city founded by the French in the early 20C. Don't miss its beautiful market, Talat Dao Heuang, the largest market in Southern Laos, where visitors can buy coffee from the Bolaven plateau. Pakse is a good base from which to explore the fabulous Khmer ruins of the Vat Phu, the refreshing waterfalls of the Bolaven plateau, and the Four Thousand Islands archipelago (Si Phan Don).
Mysterious and cut off from the rest of the world for many years, Laos is justly proud of its contrasting landscapes, dotted with caves, waterfalls and temples. Welcome to the Land of a Million Elephants!
