A legendary city in the eyes of 19C explorers, Luang Prabang, the capital of the kingdom of the million elephants, is the jewel in the crown of Laos. Here, at the confluence of the Mekong and the Nam Khan, the gracious curved roofs of its pagodas and the golden spires of its stupas stand alongside the characteristic silhouette of colonial buildings - a harmonious ensemble that UNESCO added to its World Heritage List in 1995. Among the thirty or so listed pagodas, don't miss the remarkable Vat Xieng Thong.
Mysterious and cut off from the rest of the world for many years, Laos is justly proud of its contrasting landscapes, dotted with caves, waterfalls and temples. Welcome to the Land of a Million Elephants!
