Muang Khoun
The Essential
Three 16C stupas survived the the Vietnam War, which destroyed the former regional capital. The graceful brick outline of the most spectacular, That Foun (1576), stands on a hillock. That Chomphet (1564) is little more than a mound of bricks overrun with vegetation, while That Dam stands inside a pagoda in the city centre. On the way out of town, Wat Phia temple is home to a large seated Buddha on a 16C brick platform.
