The hotel and its unusual swimming pool are open to visitors making it the city state’s new place to.

Singapore’s brand new and breathtakingly high hotel appears to touch the sky. Two hundred metres up from the ground and resting on the complex’s three towers a platform of 12 400 m² supports the world’s highest swimming pool, which at 150m long also makes it the largest outdoor pool. This infinity edge pool gives the strange impression of being suspended in the air upon a concrete canopy. We wanted to jump in from the ledge, but a whistle sounded immediately. Oh yes... of course, we’re in Singapore, where extravagance is found only in appearances!

The place to be

The hotel and its unusual swimming pool are open to visitors making it the city state’s new place to. The tourists have their photos taken in the water and wander around the walkways of this gigantic establishment. Here there are 2561 rooms, 650 plants and 200 trees, 8000 employees, 50 kinds of dining experiences including the fashionable celebrity chef restaurants. Daniel Boulud the most American of French chefs who conquered New York with his bistrots; Gordon Ramsay, who rustles up characteristically British cuisine in his Bread Street Kitchen, modelled on the London establishment; Tetsuya Wakada direct from Sydney, Wolfgang Puck from Los Angeles and Mario Batali from New York who in Marina Bay Sands has opened Osteria Mozza,  a mozzarella bar serving every variety possible as well as burratas and bocconcinos. There’s also a steakhouse serving Kobe beef, a pizzeria, dimsum, French gastronomy and Sino-French cuisine by Justin Quek. It seems like Marina Bay wants to cover every possibility and monopolise the visitors. It’s a town within a town as the butler of the Guy Savoy restaurant explains “You’ve got it all here - a supermarket, a pharmacy, a casino, restaurants, shopping, a business centre, theatres, and soon a museum... This concept has already existed in Singapore, but it’s been pushed to the extreme here.”

“Always more” seems to be the creed of Sheldon Adelson, the American billionaire who is the owner of the Las Vegas Sands group. Opened in April 2010, the Marina Bay Sands is includes  two theatres, a state of the art sports hall, an art and science museum inaugurated on 17th February, a plaza next to the waterfront for large gatherings and an 800,000 square metre shopping centre. To sum it up progress is unstoppable here in Singapore. And if you enjoy the most beautiful view of the city from the 57th floor, then it is good to go down and enjoy it at ground level too!
