When to go
Sri Lanka is hot all year round, except up in the mountains, and the water temperature is very pleasant. The island is nonetheless subject to a tropical climate and undergoes two rainy seasons.
The Yala monsoon (great monsoon) lasts from May to August in the south and west of the island; the dry season lasts from December to March in this region.
The Maha monsoon is active from November to March in the northeast, but this “minor monsoon” doesn’t always occur.
All things considered, if you want to travel around the entire country, the best time to go is between January and March, to avoid the main monsoon. This is also the peak tourist season. You will be able to make the most of the seaside (the rainy season makes bathing dangerous) and hiking excursions to the mountains.
Avoid October-November when it rains practically everywhere.
If you would like to attend the countless religious festivals of Sri Lanka’s calendar, when prices rise, don’t forget to take an umbrella!
Formalities and useful addresses
In addition to a passport valid 6 months after leaving, a return ticket and proof of adequate resources, you will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), which can be acquired online (highly recommended (www.eta.gov.lk, official website)), or a normal visa can be delivered upon arrival (expect long delays).
