Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage

Elephants have always been revered in the Buddhist faith, illustrated by the animals in ritual processions, caparisoned in gold and silver, a favourite iconographic theme of cave frescoes, paintings and bas-reliefs. The island is sensitive to the fate of the elephant as the orphanage of Pinnewala demonstrates, notwithstanding the consequences of the sudden upsurge of tourism. Despite ethical concerns, we suggest you admire the animals, whilst avoiding direct contact.
