Ambalangoda is famous for its colourful masks, whose grimacing faces, bulging eyes, buck teeth and lolling tongues are part of the Kolam, a ritual masked drama of the ancient Karava community. The small coastal town of Ambalangoda is rich in carving workshops whose wood sculpting heritage is, sadly, often more of a tourist lure than a genuine craft tradition. Most of the workshops are flanked by a small display room that showcases a broad range of the craftsmen's skills.
